Tempers flared and chaos reigned in Pau, leaving La Rochelle reeling from a high-scoring defeat – and their coach, Ronan O'Gara, potentially facing another ban. But was O'Gara's dismissal justified, or did the referee's actions unfairly impact the game?
In a wild match that saw a staggering 13 tries, La Rochelle fell 53-33 to Pau. But the scoreline barely tells the full story. An early red card, a touchline ban for O'Gara, and a flurry of late drama made this a game to remember – for all the wrong reasons, if you're a La Rochelle fan.
The drama started almost immediately. Just 34 seconds into the game, La Rochelle fly-half Antoine Hastoy was sent off for kicking out at Pau winger Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang after a high ball contest. The referee, Jeremy Rozier, deemed the contact with Grandidier-Nkanang's face worthy of a red card. But here's where it gets controversial... Was it a deliberate act of aggression, or an accidental consequence of an unbalanced landing?
O'Gara, visibly furious, questioned Rozier's decision from the sidelines. And this is the part most people miss...Rozier, already on edge, summoned O'Gara and warned him that further dissent would result in his removal from the touchline. Unfortunately for La Rochelle, O'Gara couldn't contain his frustration, and about an hour into the game, he was indeed sent to the stands for continued disagreement with the referee's calls. Could O'Gara have handled the situation better? Absolutely. But did the referee escalate the situation unnecessarily? That's a debate for the ages.
Despite being a man down early and then losing their coach, La Rochelle showed incredible resilience. Moments after O'Gara's dismissal, Dillyn Leyds scored their fourth try, bringing them within touching distance of Pau. It was a testament to their fighting spirit, but ultimately not enough to overcome the deficit.
Pau, known for their aerial tactics, exploited La Rochelle's weakened defense. Sebastien Piqueronies' young side used well-weighted kicks to create try-scoring opportunities. Gregoire Arfeuil beat Jack Nowell to an Axel Desperes kick, leading to Fabien Brau-Boirie's opening try. Arfeuil later scored one of his own, showcasing Pau's effective use of the high ball.
La Rochelle responded with tries from UJ Seuteni and Jules Favre, but Pau continued to pull away. Tries from Julian Montoya, Grandidier-Nkanang, and Thomas Laclayat kept the pressure on. La Rochelle replacement Aleksandre Kuntelia scored to keep them in the hunt, but then came O'Gara's dismissal and a sin-bin for Charles Kante Samba, reducing La Rochelle to 13 players.
With a two-man advantage, Pau capitalized. Beka Gorgadze and Brau-Boirie scored, securing the bonus-point try. Favre scored a second for La Rochelle, but Pau's Youri Delhommel ultimately sealed the bonus point win for his team. The game ended with a flurry of penalties and a yellow card for La Rochelle's Thomas Lavault, highlighting the tension and frustration on the field.
Elsewhere in the Top 14: Toulouse celebrated Antoine Dupont's return with a win over Racing 92, but bid farewell to Pita Ahki. Castres secured a less-than-convincing win over Perpignan, while Bayonne edged out Lyon in gloomy conditions. A controversial refereeing decision marred Stade Francais' loss to Clermont, while Montpellier overcame Bordeaux, and Toulon dominated Montauban.
What do you think? Was O'Gara's dismissal justified? Did the referee have too much of an influence on the game? And should referees be more lenient with coaches expressing their opinions in the heat of the moment? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
