ISS Astronauts Take Cover from Deadly Solar Storm Radiation as Auroras Light Up Earth (2025)

While the world marveled at the stunning auroras lighting up the skies, a less-known danger lurked for those beyond Earth's protective embrace. The sun's fury unleashed a double-edged sword, with its beauty and peril. Recently, astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) had to take cover from the very phenomenon that captivated Earth's inhabitants.

As solar storms unleashed their might, the ISS crew had to adapt. A recent communication reveals that the astronauts had to rearrange their sleeping quarters due to the potential radiation threat. On November 11 and 12, the sunspot group AR4274 sent coronal mass ejections our way, resulting in breathtaking auroras across the Northern Hemisphere. But these awe-inspiring displays are a mere byproduct of a more serious concern.

The same particles that paint the sky with vibrant hues also carry heavy, radioactive ions. And this is where it gets tricky for astronauts. While Earth's magnetosphere shields us from these harmful particles, astronauts in orbit are more exposed. But fear not, the ISS has its own safeguards. Only the Russian crew members were advised to sleep elsewhere, while the USOS crew and Roscosmos cosmonauts took refuge in designated areas. And the crew was also provided with a list of no-go zones during the solar storm.

ISS Expedition 73 is a diverse team, including NASA astronauts Mike Fincke, Jonny Kim, and Zena Cardman, as well as JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui. They arrived at the ISS in August via a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and are scheduled for a three-month stay. With the U.S. government shutdown resolved, American astronauts are back online, and Jonny Kim shared a breathtaking aurora video from space, taken in September, as his social media comeback.

And now, a word from our space correspondent, Josh Dinner. Josh has been covering the space beat since 2016, capturing NASA's commercial ventures and crewed missions. He's also an avid model rocket builder and photographer, sharing his work on Instagram and his website. Follow him on X for space insights, served in haiku form.

But here's where it gets controversial: are we doing enough to protect our astronauts from the sun's wrath? The ISS has measures in place, but is it enough? Share your thoughts in the comments, and let's explore the complexities of space exploration together.
